The requesting DHB is required to inform St John regarding Patient compatibility. The following patients should not share an ambulance with another patient:

  • Infectious or contagious patients.
  • At-risk patients, such as neonates, or those with immune deficiencies.
  • Patients in active labour.
  • Patients with acute psychiatric illness or have behavioural problems.
  • Confused, restless or cerebrally irritable patients.
  • Patients requiring intensive care during transport.
  • Age ranges of patients may make a transfer incompatible.

The compatibility of patients to travel together is the responsibility of the requesting DHB. Any variance from the stated parameters may occur at the discretion of the relevant clinician at the referring facility.
